Please read before visiting the Records & Research Centre as you will be asked to sign a copy on arrival.

  1. The Fleet Air Arm Museum Archive is not a lending library and there is no open access to its collection. All requests must be made to members of staff who will bring the material to you. Public access is to the Search Rooms only - not
    to the archive stores

  2. Documents, even of twentieth century date, are very vulnerable to damage and it is crucial that they are treated with respect. The following simple rules are designed to ensure the long-term survival of the material in the collection. They apply equally to all classes of record, even when they are documents which you may have used during your service career: when they enter the Museum, they become archival records intended for long-term preservation.

    • Lockers are provided and only those items necessary to your visit may be taken into the Search Rooms.
    • No food or drink of any form is allowed into the Search Rooms. This includes sweets, chewing gum and bottled water. If you need to use medicated sweets during your visit, this must be outside the Search Rooms.
    • No smoking is permitted within the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
    • Notes may either be taken using pencil or a laptop computer. Biros, highlighters, pens, ink, felt tips, correcting fluid, adhesives, adhesive tapes, post-it notes, sharp instruments, newspapers and any other objects likely to cause damage to, or mark, reference materials must be left outside the Search Rooms. Cameras may not be used since this risks infringement of copyright.
    • A photocopying service available - please ask a member of staff.
    • Pages may be marked and places kept by using the slips of paper provided as bookmarks. The use of other methods, e.g. post-it notes, turned corners, weights, written markings etc is strictly forbidden.
    • Turning pages with moistened fingers causes permanent damage to the paper and must not be done.
    • Files of papers must not be taken apart
    • Do not lean on, or over, reference material or place any object on it.
  3. If you find any damaged material, please contact a member of staff.

  4. Researchers must obey all reasonable requests made by members of staff whether relating to the enforcement of these regulations or to other matters such as fire & safety.

  5. Due to limited space for researchers, children under the age of 14 are not admitted.

  6. Mobile phones should be switched off during your time in the Archive

  7. Material held by the Fleet Air Arm Museum Archive is subject to different aspects of Copyright law. Please consult with a member of staff to ensure that you understand the status of the material you wish to consult.

  8. Researchers are required to sign an Agreement covering the consultation and use of material from the Fleet Air Arm Museum Archive. They must also present accepted proof of identity on arrival (e.g. passport, driving licence, Service ID or current utilities bill). Details of the information which you provide will be treated as confidential. It will not be disclosed or made available to third parties.
