Welcome to the Fleet Air Arm Museum Centre for Naval Aviation Records & Research.
Archive
The collection
covers a wide range of documents from official and private sources, related to
the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm. They cover areas such as
aircraft, ships, equipment, air stations, operations and personnel. Amongst the
most regularly consulted are the Squadron Line Books and Record Books, Air
Publications and aircraft accident records.
The Centre also holds documents
relating to service in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines before and during the
First World War. Personal papers from important figures in aviation are held.
The very large
photographic collection covers all areas within the Museum's remit and is widely
used by researchers and authors. It comprises material from both official and
private sources.
Items mentioned on these pages are only a sample of what is held, and the collection is growing continuously.
Making your Enquiry
For many years
we have tried to provide researchers with a correspondence service but the sheer
weight of demand, allied to staff changes and also the need to focus more
of our resources on internal needs such as exhibition work, means that we can no
longer provide this service. You may still visit the Museum to conduct your own
research but this has to be by appointment
only.
We will be happy to
provide you with the research materials, and to assist you where necessary. If
you decide to take this option, it is essential that you arrange an appointment
so that we can ensure that space, and relevant information, is available.
The Records and Research Centre is open from 1000 to 1300 and 1400 to 1600. We
are not open during weekends or on Bank Holidays.
A
research fee may be levied but please do not send money in advance.
As the Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during November to April, the Records and Research Centre will also be closed on those days.
