The Fleet Air Arm Museum is a valuable educational resource not just for History but for English, Science, Design Technology, Art, Religious Education and GNVQ in Leisure and Tourism. We are experienced in dealing with children of all ages and abilities and experience has shown that a visit to the Museum offers opportunities for learning not readily available in the classroom.

Julia Hodson is the Museum's Education Officer. She has a background in teaching, field studies and is a blue Badge Tourist Guide. She makes full use of the Education Facilities by offering workshops, teaching sessions and tours to pupils and students from the early years through secondary education and on to apprentices and undergraduates.

Teaching at the Museum is designed to be 'hands on' and 'evidence based' with full use made of the Museum's excellent collection. Schools and colleges might choose to use the Museum to underpin their studies of the History of the Twentieth Century with evidence from exhibitions on WW1, WW2, Korea, the Cold War and other recent conflicts. One of the most popular options for Key Stage 2 groups is the 'Evacuation Special'. Children are 'evacuated' to the Museum to prepare themselves for war by learning bomb drills, looking at artefacts, weighing out their rations and a variety of other pratical activities.

The Education Department also offer workshops and resources designed to complement the Science and Design Technology Curriculum. These explore Physics of Flight and the development of aviation technology and are especially relevant to the Forces and Motion component curriculum. Pupils doing GNVQ's in Leisure and Recreation and Travel and Tourism visit the Museum to use it as a case study. In fact the range of subjects that can be covered by a visit is vast, for example, have you ever thought of Concorde as a work of art or the issues surrounding the use of Kamikaze pilots as a source for citizenship studies?

We have many more ideas for educational activities that we would like to run at the Museum and we welcome the ideas and views of teachers in developing and refining programmes. Let us know if we can help you in any way.

All teachers are invited to come to the Museum for a Free preliminary visit to plan and discuss their needs with the staff. If you are not sure we can help you, why not come along and see what we can offer.

Lunch

During the summer months schools are invited to use the large area of grass at the front of the Museum. This offers primary aged children to use the Adventure Playground. During cold or wet weather schools may use the Swordfish Centre. We ask for your co-operation in leaving these areas tidy for other users.

Groups

There are no restrictions on the size of the group. Special Need groups please contact the education staff to discuss your particular requirements.

Security

The Museum is located alongside the RNAS Yeovilton and so all bags must be kept with the individual at all times. Any bag brought into the Museum is liable to a search before being allowed into the building. If your bag is not essential please leave it in your vehicle, your ticket allows re-entry on the day of your visit.

Supervision

Supervision is requested at all times and is the responsibility of the adults in the party. Please ensure that all adults are aware of what is expected of them. No child under the age of 16 is allowed through the 'Carrier' exhibition unless they are accompanied by an adult.
We insist that the children are told that running is not allowed in the Museum. This is for their own safety.

Shop

The shop is located near the exit. We advise that groups visit the shop in numbers no more than 10 at any one time. This will prevent crowding and allow our staff to deal with you more efficiently.
